We waited and waited for the new Mexican restaurant, Rosa’s Cafe /Tortilla Factory. It is finally open.
At night in the lights, its palm trees and pink, blue and tan hues are reminiscent of Miami Vice. In the daylight its just reminiscent of vice, a big hot pink house of ill repute. Man, its ugly in the daylight.
My feelings my be jaundiced by the fact that I actually drove through and purchased some “food” a couple nights ago. I use the terms food and bought very loosely. Food indicates that it is actually edible and bought hints a trading money for product which didn’t completely happen
I ordered:
- Two cheese enchilada dinners with chili. (Two cheese enchiladas, chili, rice and beans in each order)
- Four “crispy” beef tacos
- Large order of chips and queso
- One guacamole salad
To start with it cost $24.78 for drive through food in a sack. A bit pricey if you ask me.
$1.19 for a “crispy” beef taco is a little high. But $1.19 each for “crispy” beef tacos that have a stale non-”crispy” shell is freakin insane. Someone please tell me how I can get a stale “crispy” taco shell from a restaurant that has only been open for two days?
The queso is not queso. They just didn’t think that people would buy it if they called it “Crappy Cheese Soup With Cumin and Chili Power Poured In With No Apparent Plan Or Taste Direction.”
Most importantly…. I can’t tell you how bad the guacamole was….. not that it is was so bad I can’t find the words to describe it, I just don’t know how bad it was because they didn’t put it in the bag. How can you hand me a receipt with “1 #19 GUAC SALAD $3.99″ printed right on it and not put my $3.99 GUAC SALAD in my bag?
Other than that it wasn’t horrible food. And it was very fast. Of course it is pretty quick to just throw whatever you want in a bag, without looking at the receipt and shove it out the window.
I’m not bitter.
Just got back from lunch at the newest cafe/diner in town.

We had a great meal and enjoyed the cleanliness and tasteful decoration. The cafe is divided with the east side decorated in University of Oklahoma crimson and white and the west side sporting the orange and white of Oklahoma State University. It is very open with ample room for large groups. The Breakfast Menu and Lunch Menu are quite extensive which makes it difficult for me because I have trouble with two choices much less an entire page from which to choose.
Lynna chose the special of the day, roast beef and three sides of salad, green beans and mashed potatoes with brown gravy.
I finally decided on Kitty’s Chicken which consists of bite-size pieces of breast meat lightly breaded and deep fried. And a bowl of gravy to dip it in. I went with the mac and cheese, salad, and green beans.
I am really happy to have another restaurant near downtown, but I have a couple small negatives that I will mention.
My mac and cheese was a little less than room temperature and I like it warm if not hot.
We did not get our salads until after our entrees had arrived. Not a big deal, I just kinda like to get the salad out of the way first.
The salad appeared to be just your average bag of salad. Again not really a bad thing … I would just like a little more substantial salad. Oh and can we get the salad served in smaller pieces or a larger bowl. Big pieces in a small bowl don’t give you much room to herd that salad dressing toward the bottom of the bowl.
All in all…. we will both be back. And WELCOME.
I think this says it all….

I think this says it all….
If you haven’t eaten at Big Chef Restaurant you are making the same mistake we made for way too long. The atmosphere is 1960’s Cafe / Diner. The menu is eclectic to say the least. My wife and I find it very difficult to make a decision on which of the wonderful sandwiches or lunch specials to order each time we visit. It is hard enough deciding what section of the menu to order from much less what to order in that section.
You can munch on a big plate of nachos, a giant size bowl of chili or three eggs over easy, two strips of bacon, two sausage patties and a steaming bowl of sausage gravy to pour over the large biscuits. Or a fruit plate with cottage cheese which is what I always have….. sure if I keep saying that the pounds should just drop off.
Trust me when I tell you that everything that we have ordered has been fresh, hot and, most importantly, delicious.
Today I had the Chili Burger with extra onion, onion rings, and a big ol’ slice of what must have been a Vidalia onion.

The catfish is wonderful as is the brown beans and cornbread. Try it all but do it fast because, sadly, there is a for-sale sign in front of the restaurant.
For those of you that are, like me, monolingual, the title reads, “Ortega, the best Mexican food that I have eaten in my life.”
Ok… I used Babel fish to translate the title. That’s because for the first 47 years of my life the only Spanish I had needed to use was “dos cervezas frías” and “Dónde está el tocador?”
That has all changed. Please welcome Ortega Mexican Restaurant to Lawton. It is family owned and operated and is located across the street from Blockbuster, at 5525 NW Cache Road, nesseled inbetween Crosby Park Appartments.
More later………. after lunch….
Occasionally I stop by the new Burger King on Sheridan Rd. for a sausage biscuit and a little pack of Mayonnaise. They are fairly inexpensive ($1) and they won’t actually kill you.
Ok… to be totally truthful I stop by there two or three times a week, and….. I usually have two sausage biscuits and two little packs of Mayonnaise. But I still don’t think it will kill me.
It may all be moot though…. because this may be the last day for sausage biscuits from the King….. As I paid my $2.14 for the biscuits, the window girl looked at me and said…. (wait for it)…. “Hey, your the Mayonnaise guy.” I may be forced to go back to eating $1 sausage biscuits from Gangdonalds.
